Ierapetra: A Vibrant Coastal Town

Ierapetra is the main town in its region, known for its year-round activity and prosperity largely due to the thriving agriculture in the area. While it hosts a few small hotels, they cater primarily to locals rather than tourists.

The Town Beach

Located to the right of the Coastguard Office along the seafront, the town beach has recently undergone an upgrade. The beach, boasting a Blue Flag for cleanliness, attracts many of the well-heeled locals who frequent the nearby tavernas and cafes. The clear, clean waters are home to two turtles that enjoy mingling with children in the shallows during the summer months.

Vainia: A Traditional Village

Just 2 km from Ierapetra, Vainia is a traditional village perched on an elevated spot overlooking the bay. The village square's taverna is renowned for its excellent food and lively atmosphere, drawing visitors from Ierapetra and in-the-know tourists.

Chrissi Island: A Natural Paradise

Chrissi Island, located about 10 km offshore from Ierapetra, is an uninhabited haven with stunning white sand beaches. Accessible daily by boat, the island is a protected Nature Reserve. Despite the absence of tavernas or loungers, visitors can enjoy the pristine beaches and natural beauty.

Mirtos: A Charming Coastal Village

About 15 km west of Ierapetra, Mirtos is a delightful small coastal village. The drive to Mirtos, though initially through an industrial zone, is rewarding. The village features shady backstreets, artisan shops, boutiques, and a seafront lined with cafes and tavernas. Accommodations range from upmarket boutique styles to traditional guesthouses. Mirtos, with its unique microclimate, remains sheltered even when the north wind blows. The "Mirtos on the Move" video on YouTube offers a glimpse of the village's charm.

Psarapoula Beach Taverna: A Hidden Gem

Situated about 7 km east of Ierapetra, Psarapoula Beach Taverna is often regarded as the prettiest beach taverna in Crete. Located near the Kakkos Bay Hotel, the beach is composed of small, beautiful pebbles, and offers excellent snorkeling in a nearby cove.

Achlia Beach: A Scenic Retreat

Approximately 10 km east of Ierapetra, along a scenic coast road, lies Achlia Beach. This beach is a dramatic cove with high cliffs, sandy stretches, and colourful shingle. The exceptional beach taverna is a highlight, offering a delightful dining experience.

Makrigialos: A Family-Friendly Resort

Makrigialos, about 15 km east of Ierapetra, is a picturesque resort with a charming harbour and a long beach of golden sand. Popular with families, the beach features shallow, gently shelving waters. The beachfront is lined with tavernas and cafes, each providing loungers and umbrellas for visitors.

Diaskari Beach: Secluded Serenity

Just beyond Makrigialos, Diaskari Beach offers superb golden sands and a sense of seclusion. While there is a small taverna at the start, the beach is usually quiet, and the far end allows for discreet nude sunbathing and swimming.

Xerokambos: An Adventurer's Delight

Xerokambos, at the eastern end of the island, attracts only the most adventurous visitors. This largely deserted, unspoilt sandy beach offers a tranquil escape for those willing to make the journey.
