Essaouira is a beautiful port city located in the western part of Morocco, known for its stunning beaches, rich history, and welcoming locals. In recent years, Essaouira has become a popular destination for both tourists and expats alike, drawn in by its relaxed pace of life, vibrant culture, and stunning scenery.

If you are considering property in Essaouira, you may want to consider living in the medina, the historic walled old town. The medina is a maze of narrow streets and alleys, lined with traditional Moroccan buildings and bustling with activity. It's a great place to immerse yourself in local life, get to know your neighbours, and experience the unique character of this enchanting city.

One of the most appealing aspects of life in Essaouira is the kindness and hospitality of the local people. Moroccans are famous for their warm and welcoming nature, and this is especially true in Essaouira. From the cobbler who lives down the street to the shopkeeper at the corner store, you'll find that people are always eager to help and make you feel at home.

Speaking of the cobbler, if you were interested in buying a riad in the medina, he may well be the person to show you around. In Essaouira, word of mouth is often the best way to get things done, and you'll find that your neighbours are always willing to lend a hand and that people in general are a lot more willing to offer you their time, whether that’s to sit and have tea with you, or spend the day going across the country to show you the town where they make the tiles you want for your terrace!

Living in Essaouira requires a certain laid-back attitude. Things move at a slower pace here, and you can't always expect workmen to show up on time or stick to a strict schedule. However, this is just part of the charm of life in Essaouira. The upside is that you'll find that workmen are often sat drinking tea in their workshops rather than fully booked at every moment, so they’re available at short notice and you won't have to wait weeks to get a slot!

Despite its relaxed pace of life, Essaouira is surprisingly well-connected. The city boasts fast 500M fibre optic broadband, and a direct RyanAir flight to London. This makes it an ideal place for remote working, as you'll be in the same time zone as much of Europe, have access to high-speed internet and be able to get to London in 3h30 if needed.

Another great benefit of living in Essaouira is the climate. The weather is warm and sunny all year round, with temperatures averaging between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. You won't need air conditioning or radiators here, as the temperature is always comfortable. There's just enough of a chill at night to make you want to light the open fire and snuggle up with a good book.

Essaouira forestEssaouira forest

One of my favourite places to go is actually the forest around the town. You can walk to the edge of town then all of a sudden the town stops and the forest begins. It’s not like other countries where everything is fenced off and owned by somebody, once you’re in the forest, you can pick a point on the horizon and just walk there. It gives an incredible sense of freedom and feeling of wellbeing.

So why not take a leap of faith and start your new life in this enchanting Moroccan city?
