Welcome to Banyuls dels Aspres, a friendly unpretentious village 20 minutes drive from the sea and Spain. It is set on a low hill in the Roussillon plain, said to be the sunniest part of France. Its location means that the village has almost no through-traffic. Rue d’Andorre is a quiet street about 30 yards from the main square with its general store and other shops. Fruit and vegetable stalls are regularly set up in the square, overlooked by its parish church.
The house’s entire ground floor comprises the living-room, kitchen and dining area. Everything is well arranged for comfort and convenience. There is a small pantry off one corner of the room.
Stairs take you from the living-room to the first floor landing. Here there is the main shower-room with shower, wc and basin. There is a separate wc adjacent to the shower-room. On this floor there are two rooms which we use as one single and one twin bedroom.
The second floor comprises two rooms which we use as one large twin bedroom and one double bedroom. The latter includes en suite shower and basin.
The roof terrace extends over the house’s entire floor area. You enter into a ‘glass house’ where we keep a fridge, a small stove, kettle etc. Doors take you out onto the terrace with its fitted barbecue, outdoor lighting, and water supply. The terrace is fenced for security. We have spent many hours here relaxing in the sun or dining in the evening.
From the roof terrace, there is a wonderful view extending along the Albères hills towards the coast near Collioure; then along the coast past Elne and Perpignan; and then round (past your village church tower, illuminated in the evening) to the foothills of Pic du Canigou.
Banyuls dels Aspres is equidistant (11 miles) from the Mediterranean, the Spanish border and Perpignan. Thus you are near the coastal tourist belt, but not on it. The beaches have won European awards for cleanliness and are well supervised. There is an international golf course at St. Cyprien and a popular aquapark nearby. Along the coast you have Collioure, the artists’ paradise; the port and marina at Port Vendres; the pleasant sea-side town of Banyuls sur Mer. This is the Catalan area of France, and there are many historic reminders of its turbulent history – abbeys, castles, fortified settlements – throughout the Roussillon. Vide-greniers, jumble sales abound in the region every weekend. At Banyuls dels Aspres, you could live off the village – thanks to the general store, the bar and other shops – but your family shopping will be done at Le Boulou four miles away, or in Perpignan for a wider selection.
We have had our house at Banyuls dels Aspres for thirty years. We have used it for our own holidays, enjoying the peace and quiet of the village as well as the cultural and scenic riches of the area. We have also let the house to holiday-makers, many of whom have returned again and again, writing glowing reports in our travel journal. We hope that you too will derive like pleasures and delights from your ownership of this pleasant, relaxing property.
