Located in the on the outskirts of Penela, which is the Centre of the country. Penela is the southernmost municipality of the Coimbra district, bordering Ansião, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Condeixa-a-Nova, Miranda do Corvo and Soure. The Castle sits very prominently at the top of the town of Penela, it is one of the oldest counties of the country. There are several mountain villages, with typical and well-preserved rural architecture in the municipality. It is also one of the best-known areas for producing Rabaçal cheese. This area is very popular with expats for its stunning views, river beaches and outdoor activity. There is a popular International Taverna/Restaurant within 10 minutes walking distance that serves excellent food and the main gathering place of the surrounding areas.
The closest biggest town is Ansião which is around 15 minutes’ drive away, not only does it have all the large shops you might need it is also well known for the vastness of the valleys and mountains. Typical villages and many existing viewpoints overlooking the stunning areas. The rotating windmills of Melriça , Outeiro and Portela are living testimonies of the typical nature of this region. The Nabão River is another must see location in this area or you can explore the 7 walking routes that the municipality offers you.
The beautiful city of Coimbra, Portugal`s third biggest city is only 30 minutes away. Coimbra is regarded as the university city of Portugal, but for over 100 years it was the medieval capital of the country. This interplay of ancient history and progressive student ideals come together in Coimbra to form a fascinating tourist destination. The city has the River Mondega winding its way through the city which adds to its charm. Built on the grounds of a former palace, the university is famed for its baroque library, the Biblioteca Joanina, and its 18th-century bell tower. In the city's old town lies the 12th-century Romanesque cathedral Sé Velha.
