The surrounding area is rich in history and taking center stage is the Castle of Chignolo Po, one of the Lombardy regions hidden gems, this majestic building has a history dating back to the late 900's and is a popular venue for day visitors as well as wedding parties.
Just outside of Chignolo you will find the hills of San Colombano al Lambro, the highest points on the Lombardy Plains. These hills are covered in vineyards maintained by either small independent producers or larger commercial wineries, some of which offer tours and tasting.
A short distance from Chignolo the river Po Italy's longest river, this offers plenty of scenic walks or bike rides along the banks and cycle paths that have been created. Throughout the year events are held on the river ranging from concerts on floating barges, motorboat racing and firework displays.
Further afield are historic towns like Pavia and Piacenza, both within 30 minutes drive they offer a wealth of historical and cultural delights along with many bars, cafes and restaurants to tempt the palate.
The Via Francigena, an ancient road and pilgrimage route running from the cathedral city of Canterbury through France and Switzerland and on to Rome passes through Chignolo Po, and the local bars, cafes and B&Bs offer those making the pilgrimage a break and chance to refresh both mind and body before continuing their journey.
Chignolo Po and the surrounding area may not have the exposure of the more famous Italian areas such as Tuscany, the Alpine towns or the coastal areas that are so well known. It offers those wanting to experience the real Italy, away from the more touristic areas, the opportunity to explore and discover what is on offer.
