LE PRESBYTERE
1-3 Rue du Guesclin, 87500 Coussac-Bonneval
Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.

The 18th century presbytery in the Limousin village of Coussac-Bonneval was purchased privately from the Mairie in the spring of 2021. The current owners are the first ever private owners of the presbytery and hold an unencumbered deed for the property. This is an opportunity to complete the transformation of this large, striking, historic building (known locally as “the big house”) at the centre of the oldest part of the village to an elegant townhouse. The completion of what will be 4-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom accommodation at Le Presbytere will provide a convenient and unique accommodation option for those seeking an elegantly appointed private townhouse residence with the ambiance of an 18th century building yet with all the comforts of the 21st century.

Coussac-Bonneval is a village in the south of Haute Vienne in the Limousin region between Limoges and Perigueux. It is dominated by Château de Bonneval which has belonged to the Comtes and Marquis de Bonneval for over 600 years. The original 11th century fortress was destroyed in the 100 Year War, rebuilt in the 15th century, and updated throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The local area has broad appeal for sports enthusiasts, hikers, cyclists, history buffs, writers, and painters, as well as those seeking an unspoiled restful retreat.

The Limousin region is well known for its farming heritage, its eponymous cattle, and, by association, its food. Rich cassoulets are a speciality here. Thiviers, the capital of foie gras, and Perigueux are a short drive away. Among many other gourmet treats, the area is famous for the ever-popular foie gras, lamb, apples, cider, and the local specialty dessert Flognarde. The region provides significant drawcards and appeal to visitors because of its natural unspoilt beauty, lack of industry, long history. Coussac-Bonneval is one of 18 villages along the fascinating Richard the Lionheart Route.

The area is well served by transport links. The closest airport to Coussac-Bonneval is Limoges (LIG) Airport which is 40.7 km away. Other airports include Brive (BVE) (42.1 km), Bergerac (EGC) (99.4 km), Clermont-Ferrand (CFE) (146 km), and Bordeaux (BOD) (175.9 km). There are regular train services from Limoges to Paris Austerlitz taking approximately 3h 36m (214 miles / 344 km).

History

In 18th century France, the parish priest was the spiritual leader of the parish. In about 1770, all the parishes in the Limousin region decided to build presbyteries to provide permanent accommodation for their parish priest. In 1776, the priest in Coussac-Bonneval, Yrieix Imbert, requested the church authorities in Limoges to encourage the inhabitants of the parish to finance and have constructed a suitable house for him in the village.

Le Presbytere was completed in 1780 and 244+ years later, it stands prominently next to the 15th century church St Saturnin - it was the home for all successive priests of Coussac-Bonneval until the end of the 20th century. The architectural plans, drawn up by the Limoges-based architect Martial Chateau in 1777, are still in existence and are kept in the archives of the notary Maleyx.
