La Bergerie is situated in the modern town of Châtellerault, with a population of 31,000. It is 5 minutes from the A10 motorway, half way between Paris and Bordeaux, and between the city of Tours on the Loire Valley and Poitiers. One can visit Paris for the day by train (TGV) direct from Châtellerault in only 76 minutes and the Atlantic coast is an easy drive of 90 minutes.
The town is very French with a lovely open centre, with pavement cafés and restaurants, and open air concerts in the summer and an open air ice-rink during the Christmas holidays. There are markets three times a week, shops and supermarkets, theatres, cinemas, a jazz festival, a classical music festival, an art school, a music conservatoire, a circus school, outstanding sports facilities, nature reserves, a lake and a forest.
There is a beautiful beach at the local resort of St Cyr, with sailing, canoeing and wind surfing available, overlooked by an excellent golf course, within 20 minutes drive. The Chateaux of the Loire are with in an hour’s drive and the battle of Poitiers was fought just outside Chatellerault in 763. Futuroscope (a cinematic theme park) is only 20 minutes away.
There are nursery, primary, middle and high schools which provide a good quality education. There are some private schools too with very low school fees. This is a great way for your children to become bi-lingual and experience another culture, and become European.
The medical services are excellent with a good modern hospital in Châtellerault. There are university hospitals in both Poitiers and Tours.
