Beziers 15 minutes drive away is now more famously known for the rough and tumble of the rugby pitch than the battlefield. Aside from the architecturally astounding turreted cathedral there is the famous theatre de Beziers along with the museums art galleries, cinemas and of course many welcoming bars and restaurants.
Pezenas, 15 minutes in the other direction, is a small lively town, famed for its great Saturday market selling local produce, pottery and textiles. The Quartier Ancien is made up of many narrow winding streets, lined by centuries-old tall buildings. This was the home of Moliere, and his name is represented still in streets, hotels, bars and restaurants.
The coast, too is only 15 minutes away -choose between Marseillan Plage, the seven mile stretch of sandy beach linking Sete and Marseillan Or the more cosmopolitan resorts such as Cap d'Agde, where you will find Europe's largest naturist resort. Alternatively try Valras Plage - great for families - a little further along the coast.
Of course, you must try the wonderful fresh seafood on offer if you hurt if you head towards the coast. Snack on moules et frites or go all out and order the full two-tiered gastronomic shellfish indulgence - lobster, crab, langouste, prawns, oysters and sea urchin.
