Le Mans Information

The Le Mans 24-hour race is famous the world over, but art enthusiasts will be drawn by the magnificent cathedral. Situated in northwest France, half-way between Paris and Nantes, the town also has a lovely old centre.

In the Middle Ages Le Mans was the capital of the county of Maine. Nowadays it is the administrative centre for the Sarthe departement and a university town. In 1873 Amedee Bolide built his first steam automobile here and thus laid the foundations for the French car industry (Renault). The first 24-hour car race was held in 1923. The lovely old town has formed the backdrop for many historic films, including Cyrano de Bergerac.
