Set in the delightful “bocage” countryside it is less than an hour’s ride to the beautiful Vendée coastline with its golden, sandy beaches and is within easy reach of the “marais” with its network of canals. The well presented garden is very private and offers a picturesque view across the valley but contrary to its apparent seclusion, the house is not isolated but located in a small hamlet ideally situated within easy reach of the two villages of La Caillère and Thouarsais Bouildroux.
La Caillère is a 15 minutes walk away with all the essential facilities: Spar supermarket, baker, butcher, bar/tabac (selling English newspapers and petrol), post office, pharmacy, hair dresser, beauty salon, two banks, estate agent, notaire and an excellent restaurant. There is also a doctor, dentist and a nursing station as well as an infants school. There are various clubs providing opportunities for yoga classes, French dancing and line dancing.
The village of Thouarsais Bouildroux has a bar with small shop attached providing a “depôt de pain” service. There is an infants school in the village as well as various clubs, including the U3A and a theatre group. The village has its own fishing lake which is about 10 minutes by foot from the house, perfect for a pleasant walk.
The villages celebrate Bastille Day, the National Music Festival and host a number of fairs, markets and concerts throughout the year. There are excellent opportunities for those who enjoy walking, cycling, fishing, visiting gardens and chateaux. Two English theatre companies produce plays and there are regular showings of English language films during the winter months.
The house is centrally located between the more major towns of Fontenay-Le-Comte, Chantonnay and La Châtaigneraie where all the major supermarkets, DIY shops, garden centres and other shops can be found.
A little further afield are places well worth visiting. Coulon, known as the “Green Venice” is an attractive riverside town in the “marais” offering boat and cycle hire. The Pûy de Fou is the largest theme park in France, a superb attraction for residents and visitors alike.
Nearer to home is Vouvant, an historic village with a medieval church and ramparts overlooking the river, known as a centre for the Arts, featuring regular exhibitions in its numerous galleries. The village of Mervent is also close by, located on the river and set in the heart of a beautiful forest offering walking and horse-riding possibilities together with sailing and canoeing.
The coastal resorts of La Rochelle and Les Sables-d’Olonne are only an hour’s drive, with many smaller towns and bays in between, offering broad sandy beaches, swimming, boat trips, pleasant walks and cycle rides.
The TGV to Paris can be boarded at Poitiers (1 hour) or Nantes (1 hour 20 minutes). There are airports at La Rochelle (London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Southampton, Portugal, Ireland, Brussels and Lyon), Poitiers (London Stansted, Edinburgh and Barcelona), and Nantes (Bournemouth, East Midlands, Liverpool, Gatwick and London Stansted). All are within easy reach and have ample parking facilities. The area is well served with major roads and motorways leading to the South of France and the Bordeaux region as well as North to the Channel ports of St Malo, Caen, Le Havre, and Calais.
