Cabanas Information

The Algarve has one of the mildest and sunniest climates in Europe. Cabanas de Tavira is a fishing village on the eastern coast of the Algarve, Portugal. The eastern side is less developed and commercial than the areas west of Faro. With a little more than one thousand permanent residents, Cabanas has become a popular tourist destination in the summer because of its beautiful 3km beach, Praia de Cabanas, located on an island just offshore (Ilha de Cabanas), which belongs to Ria Formosa Natural Park. The beach is a two minute boat ride from the village. The village has many local cafes and restaurants, several local supermarkets, a fresh fish and vegetable market and a variety of shops. A new board-walk, along the length of the village front, gives charming views of the Ria Formosa and the sea. For golfers, Benamor golf course (5500 metres par 71) is less than 10 minutes drive from the apartment with Quinta da Ria (6256 metres par 72) and Quinta da Cima (6110 metres par 72) golf courses 4 km away. There are a number of other excellent golf courses within 30 minutes drive. In Cabanas you can hire bicycles, practise kite surfing and enjoy some lovely walking in the local area. The Ria Formosa is great for bird watching too with thousands of waterfowl throughout the year, especially herons, waders and ducks, but also the Audouin’s gull, little tern, spoonbill and flamingo. In winter, osprey and black-shouldered kite are regular visitors. Cabanas is an ideal base for exploring the Algarve with regular train and bus services running along the coast. The surrounding area offers numerous opportunities for visiting sites of historical interest such as Estoi (palace), Milreu (Roman ruins) and Castro Marim (nature reserve). The lovely old town of Tavira, also known as ‘the little Venice of Portugal’ is 4km away. Spain is less than 30 minutes by road or you can take a ferry from Vila Real de San Antonio on the Portuguese side of the Guardiana to Ayamonte in Spain. Cabanas is 40 minutes from Faro airport.
