Funchal Information
Madeira's capital is an elegant town, home to just less than half the island's population, their houses filling the space between the gently curved shore of its bay and the dramatic peaks which back it. The peaks rise quickly to over 1,000m (3,300ft), the northern part of the town climbing steep slopes, the houses linked by equally steep streets whose ascent raises a sweat even when taken casually.
Funchal is said to be the cleanest and prettish capital city in Europe, and with a population of 150,000 it is the most populated Island city in Portugal.
