São Martinho do Porto Information

Approximately one hour north of Lisbon, São Martinho do Porto is the jewel of Portugal's Silver Coast being a tranquil and relaxing town with approx 3,500 inhabitants. A narrow break in the cliffs of the Atlantic coast has created a stunning, shell-shaped sheltered bay which is home to an expansive beach with the gentle waters making this an ideal location for families and young children. It is of such natural beauty with its calm bay and surrounding hills that you will know that you are somewhere very special. It is the ideal place for fresh air, sun and healthy living and is popular with the Portuguese as well as other Europeans who are charmed by the location, scenery and friendly people. The bay has all you need: bank, post office, pharmacy, clinic, dentist, vet, shops, large supermarket , cafes and excellent restaurants. These are all within walking distance from the apartment, the beach being 10 minutes walk away.

The local market which is 20 minutes walk has fresh local fish, fruit and vegetables and locally baked bread. A small local shop can be found approximately 5-6 minutes walk away whilst an international supermarket (Intermarché) can be found within 5 minutes drive. A greater selection of supermarkets and fresh food, together with a greater variety of shopping can be found in the main towns approximately 14 kilometres away - Alcobaça to the east and Caldas da Rainha to the south.

A 10 minute drive away, Foz do Arelho also offers gentle bathing in the seawater lagoon. The larger waves of the Atlantic can be found not only adjacent to the lagoon, but alsi at more open beaches nearby such as Salgado, Nazaré as well as Peniche and Baleal which are a little further down the coast.

There is a great array of historical buildings, churches, castles, monasteries and fine architecture. The medieval walled town of Óbidos is approximately 15 minutes drive on the A8 and the stunning peace garden of Buddha Eden at Bombarral is 25 mins drive again on the A8. This is also in the region of the wine route Oeste.

Good public transport services operate from the Bay - bus and trains to the north as well as to Lisbon.

The area offers an excellent choice of leisure activities such as surfing, fishing, scenic walking, cycling and swimming and not forgetting RELAXING

Within 35 km there are 3 excellent golf courses:: Praia del Rei (25 mins drive), Royal Óbidos (20 mins drive) and Bom Sucesso (20 mins drive).

São Martinho do Porto is located within the municipality of Alcobaça, 1 hour drive away from Lisbon airport heading north on the A8 motorway.
