Arco da Calheta Information
Canhas is a civil parish in the municipality of Ponta do Sol. The community owes its name Canhas to one of its first settlers, Joao de Canha, who became known in history as the squire D.Diogo, the Duke of Viseu. Canhas was founded on January 30th 1557 by royal decree, but a little later, on 10th July 1578, was appointed as a community. This typical Madeiran community has much to offer in terms of culture and history. Through Canhas, the Paul da Serra can quickly be reached and it is here where the most important streams and watercourses are located, which are used to irrigate the fields. The vast green highlands, where mountains meet each other invite you on a perfect walk. The inhabitants of Canhas are mainly engaged in agriculture.
