Hilton Information

Hilton is a mysterious romantic village, perched high above the city of Pietermaritzburg and situated in the Midlands of Kwa-Zulu Natal, in the hub of the Zulu Kingdom. The midlands scenery changes constantly with its crisp snowy winters, a paradise of colours in autumn and lush different shades of green in summer. It is an area that breathes tranquillity and peace – with soft rain and gentle mist hanging in the folds of the valleys. This beautiful area with its rolling hills and natural forests, is aptly referred to as “Little Europe”.

Our unique location means that we have the Majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the North and the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, Nature and Game Reserves all on our doorstep. Hilton Village is also the starting point of the oldest Meander Route in the Country. The acclaimed and scenic Midlands Meander offers quality Arts, Crafts, Restaurants, Deli’s and many other outstanding workshops and outlets. This area, Hilton specific, also boasts undisputedly some of the most prestigious schools, boarding and day schools, primary schools, high schools, colleges and private schools, in the country. We also have all possible conveniences and amenities, making country living the ideal experience. Add to this the most modern up to date Private Hospitals, with specialists and physicians in all the various medical fields, and you have the perfect package of what is needed. Then also of course our modern upgraded Pietermaritzburg Airport with several daily flights to and from Johannesburg and all the other cities. As the capital of KwaZulu Natal, Pietermaritzburg is also the start and finish of the legendary world renowned Comrades Marathon.

We have several dams, waterfalls and nature reserves in our immediate area. The Southern Drakensberg is only an hour’s drive away and while driving on your way there, its like an ever-changing picture unfolding before you. The Kamberg and Giants Castle area, which is virtually on our doorstep, is certainly the country’s best-kept secret. Stunningly beautiful with rolling mountains that disappear in the clouds. Masses of birds, which include the Cape Vulture, the Lammergeyer vulture and different crane species. The area is also a trout fisherman’s paradise! Then of course the Central and Northern Drakensberg, which was recently declared a World Heritage Site, are also only 1 hour and fifteen minutes drive from here. The North Coast as well as the South Coast is also just an hour’s drive away. In between all these different points, there are so many things to do and to view, that you will never get bored at any time. For instance the picturesque Valley of the Thousand Hills is worth exploring, not only for the scenery also for the outstanding art and restaurants. Pietermaritzburg itself is a beautiful city with stunning architecture (there are even architectural and historical building tours available). It is a city that offers you everything you expect from a first class city but without the rush. Hilton on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg is a beautiful romantic village, with winding roads, lush vegetation and informal gardens. In early years Hilton used to be the summer hide away for the rich people of PMBurg. PMBurg can become very hot during summer and at the same time we experience this soft cooler misty climate in Hilton, which gives our village this lovely secluded and mysterious atmosphere. We are also fortunate to have shopping malls; a gym, coffee shops, restaurants and fresh produce are freely available.

People come from all over all year round meandering through our Midlands and I believe it is the oldest and certainly one of the popular tourist routes in the country.

For the more sporty and adventurous person, the Midlands are Polo and Horse country. Also known for several marathon races, including the Comrades, the Duzi canoe marathon and the Midmar Mile swimming race. Cycling and sailing events take place all year round. We will also introduce you to some of the country’s most beautiful and oldest golf courses. All sports are well catered for, and not to mention the different hiking trails and hang-gliding also on our doorstep. To top it all we have Canopy Sliding Tours over the forests of the beautiful Karkloof Valley – a first in the country, as well as four-wheel motorcycle bush and mud safaris (quad-biking trails).
