Almáchar is a Moorish “white village”. Its size however - about two thousand people at the last count - often gives it the feel of a bustling little town.
It sits about 20 km north west of the town of Velez-Malaga, which means the Fort of Malaga. It was where the army used to be garrisoned. It is 20 minutes drive from the Velez exit of the Mediterranean motorway as you drive East towards Motril from Malaga airport.
With four or five general stores, two butchers, a fresh fishmonger, a bakery, farmers warehouse, a co-operative for processing and selling fruit, two banks, a weekly market, shops that sell “a little bit of everything” plus several bars and a restaurant, - you the sense that you can get more or less all you need here if you know where to look. An arts centre, health centre, theatre, gallery, flamenco bar and swimming pool cater for the higher things in life.
