The Beautiful Valley of Hondon
Hondon de las Nieves can be found nestled between las Sierras de L'Agaiat to the North and to the South, las Sierras de Crevillente, just 27klms from the Costa Blanca coastline and a short 30 minute drive to the International Airport in Alicante. Hondon de las Nieves is a small village, inland, west of the Alicante Region.Hondon Nieves itself has a population of around 1700 people, who don't exactly rush anywhere... it is a typically manana culture here. Village life centres on the main palm-lined 'plaza' with pastel-shaded buildings, bars, restaurants and the Ayuntamiento (town hall). Several bars serve tasty tapas 'al-fresco' looking onto the plaza, which provides a focal point for the many and varied fiestas that take place throughout the year, although a small village Hondon de la Nieves hosts a large variety of shops, restaurants and amenities. The village bustles most of the time particularly market days Wednesday and Saturday, when local residents venture out to buy weekly produce. Many visitor come from Elche, Aspe and other nearby places.Hondon de las Nieves is rich in agriculture, its lush green unspoilt valleys yield all variety of fruit and vegetables with its major productions being grapes, almonds and olives.You will also see many other root crops and fruits grown here, oranges, lemons, pomegranates, artichokes, tomatoes, and onions. Nieves also boasts a world class"Bodegas Cerda", a local and proud wine merchant. The shop/museum is well worth a look whilst sampling their excellent wines and tapas.
